1992 Vibration When Excilerating

I have a 92 Ford Explorer XL 4x4, and I have a Severe vibration only when I give to gas. Yet when I take my foot off the vibration stops. I just replaced my tires all around, as well as got a front-end alianment. I had the tech chech the front end and all is tight. The alianment is within 1* of the spec. I'm at a loss as to the solution. Does anyone have any suggestions?? Should I plan to start replacing suspension parts? Have the driveshaft balanced? Or?........

It sounds like I have the exact identical problem as Neyko.
I have 1992 Explorer 4WD, 2-door.
I have severe vibration ONLY when accelerating.
When I let off gas, vibration stops.
I have done light inspection on U-joints (front & rear), motor mounts, transmission mounts, but I find nothing obvious.

I have a '91 xlt 5 speed with the same problem. The vibration will shake your teeth loose above 1000rpm upto about 3500 rpm. The harder the acceleration, the worse it is. I've pretty much ruled out the drivetrain based on the fact that on deceleration or coasting produces no shimmy (Help me out with the logic please).

I'm now theorizing that it's something to do with the EEC. I've done the KOEO test and it shows a code 67 (neutral drive switch circuit open) which I believe is normal with the clutch not engaged. I also get a code 66 from the continuous memory test (Mass Air Flow sensor circuit out-of-range). I tried disconnecting the MAF, and it started idleing very poorly (I'll assume it's good).

The only other thing I can figure is that I cleared the memory by disconnecting the battery a while ago when I replaced the starter. The manual says that "This will erase stored operating parameters from the KAM and cause the engine to run rough for a period of time while the computer relearns the information"

I haven't performed the rest of the tests yet (manily because it was below freezing last night and a half-hour was all I could take).

I hope that we find something in common that is causing this problem for all 3 of us, or find someone can shed light on this.

1992 Vibration When Excilerating

I too have this problem with my 92 Explorer. For 130,000 miles there was no significant problem. Then two weeks ago a vibration problem suddenly occurred. Under acceleration above about 25 mph the car really shakes. The vibration doesn't pulse the sterring wheel and is fairly loud inside. Reducing acceleration immediately stops the problem. In neutral, the motor runs smooth at any speed. In 4WD the vibration is reduced but is still present.

The dealer can't figure out what the problem is. They replaced the motor mounts ($500), which didn't help. They pointed me towards TSB-96-4-16, which installs a damper and a new muffler. This "fix" costs $1500 but the TSR description has the vibration occuring at 50 mph and the vibration occurring during neutral coast. This doesn't match my problem.

The mechanic said the problem might be the torque converter but he was guessing.

Any ideas what really be appreciated.

The vibration problem with my Explorer described above was caused by a bad U-joint on the rear drive shaft. It was loose when rotated by hand. New bearings fixed the problem.

My 93 4x4, the nut on the output flange from the transfer case was loose and causing vibration. Remove the front driveshaft flange and locktite the flange nut.

Vibrations which are changed by torque on the powertrain are most often a bad u-joint. In my experience, though, it's the reverse of the symptoms described above. I have had vibration on several vehicles at cruise, which would go away temporarly with a sudden increase or decrease in torque.

Sometimes a u-joint has to be disconnected to determine if it's loose.
