Outside Temp Gauge

I have a 96 Explorer XLT that has an outdoor temperature gauge in the overhead console. It will randomly display a temp (almost always much, much colder) that is not right or display the letters "OC." For example, I will be going down the road, 85 degrees will be displayed (and it's the right temp) and I look back a few minutes later and it says "21 degrees, ice" as an example. I've tried to re-calibrate the settings, but I think that pertains more to the compass than the temp. Any help, it's not a big deal, just aggravating. Thanks.

Jerry

A wire has probably come loose from the sensor or in the harness to whatever computer deciphers the signal from the sensor. If the sensor works anything like the RTDs that I am used to at work, when a connection is lost, it reverts to 32F. The sensor is located behind the grill, by the driver's headlight. It's a little black object in front of the radiator with some wires coming out of it.
