oil pan question

1991 Ranger 3.0L

On the right side of my oil pan there is a plug with an orange wire that runs up to the oil sending unit. What does this plug sense from the oil pan? It is also the source of some oil leakage. Can this be tightened up without causing any problems? Thanks.

hood, it is a low oil level sensor, turns a light on when the oil is low. tightening it may help, try it, ir not just remove it and replace the gasket

Might as well pull it, clean it all off, and reinstall it with a new gasket (if it uses one).

Thank you both very much for the info, i will try removing, cleaning, and re-installing. Should i assume that when i remove the plug, the oil will want to drain out also? If so, then this should be done during the next oil change.
