Gas Gauge Not Working

I have a 94 Explorer 4X4 with 68000 miles. I bought the truck about two months ago with the gas gauge not working. Can this problem be anything other than the sending unit? I called the local Ford dealer today and was told I have to buy the pump and sending unit together ($147.00). There are no aftermarket suppliers for the sending unit. Am I forced to go with pump and unit together?

Gas Gauge Not Working

I'm guessing when you say that the gas gauge is not working meaning it always reads empty no matter how full the tank is. Explorers are notorious for having the "brass" float that is attached to the sending unit, split open or crack and fill with gas and sink to the bottom of the tank. I had a 91' and a 94' Explorer that had this problem which is cheap to fix. Go to your local Ford Dealer and purchase the brass float for about $5.00 dollars, which they always have in stock, drop the gas tank, remove the sending unit and install the new float.
