Sending unit/fuel pump
Has anyone replaced the sending unit/fuel pump in a 93 4dr 4wd??? Is it a tough job? The gas gauge always reads empty and the truck has 125,000 miles so I want to replace the pump as well.

I don't know about a 94, but my 97 was fun to get under. I jacked the rear of the truck up as high as I could(and still feel safe under it) then dropped the tank. I believe the pump is on the top of a 94 also. Then it was just a matter of unplugging the wiring harnesses, 3 bolts and re-installing. The hardest part was just being able to get the tank back up and lined up without crimping any of the wiring harness.

I replaced the fuel pump in my '92 Explorer and the hardest part was undoing the fuel lines you need special tools which are plastic to slide into the fittings and then try to slide off the line. the first line caome off real easy the second one was a little tougher. All in all I had it done in 1 afternoon, not a tough job just ime consuming. If you have a air impact wrench it will go alot quicker. The 2 bolts for the skid plate and the support strap by the drive shaft you'll need a ratchet for. Good Luck

I just got done replacing the sending unit on my '93. I agree that disconnecting the fuel line is the most frustrating part. I have found that if you use a metal tool instead of the plactic it goes a lot quicker. I had to go to Napa to get my tool as most stores carry the plastic tool.

P.S. it goes easier if you run the tank down to 1/8 of a tank or less.
