I just replaced the spark plug on my 95' for the first time at 80,000 miles. It came with platinum plug from the factory.
Ford recommended that they be changed at 100,000 miles.
I used another set of Motorcraft platinum that I bought at Autozone.
I was very surprized to find them quite worn resulting in a large gap that far exceeded the gap spec. Based on the wear on my engine, I think they should be changed every 60,000.
I think they should be changed in the 40 to 60 K mile range simply because of the aluminum heads , even if you use anti sieze on the plug threads , 100K miles is a long time to leave a spark plug in even under ideal conditions . You said you bought Motorcraft Platinum Plugs @ Autozone ?
That's right, I bought them at Autozone. Also Pep Boys sells Motorcraft.
The emmissions label under the hood lists the recommended spark plug part number and gap. For mine its a # AWSF-42PP. Autozone's computer list them as Motorcraft OE Double Platinum. The box and plugs were labeled "Platinum AWSF-42EE". You can check this out at their web site.
On the old plugs (which were installed at the factory), I think they were labeled "Platinum AWSF-42P".
Just replaced the plugs on my 95 Explorer XLT 4x4 with 70k miles. Motorcraft plugs were also pretty worn out and the gaps were way beyond the .054 specification. Replaced them with Bosch Platinum plugs. I will not wait that long again.
okay new one for you. I drive a 03 ford ranger need to to change spark plugs has 132k changed them about 35k ago which do u guys prefer ngk /motorcraft /bosch and does the platinum really make a big difference. Thanks guys and girls.
The platinum is essential, more than that, they must be double platinum. You might get 5K - 20K out of the old style copper plugs. As far as brand, the Autolite/Motorcraft is the only one that has the right gap, heat range, and displacement. Everything else gets the gap right, but is off on the other two. The Bosch has the worst track record. I could never get more than 5000 miles out of a set before they were erroded outside the specs, and the vehicle never ran right. I use only Autolite or Motorcraft. NGK does not have the right specs either, though they are closer than Bosch.
The question is, with such narrow price range differences, why screw around with stuff that was never engineered for the vehicle?
Replaced them with Bosch Platinum plugs. I will not wait that long again.
You will not need to wait that long, they will be worn out long before that time.
