2003 Explorer SportTrac Brake Lights not working. Is it the wiring harness?

Hi everybody.

Yesterday we found out that our right and left brake lights are no longer working. The turn signals work fine as well as the top brake light on the cab.

We have tried the trick where you position the steering wheel in the top position and that does nothing UNLESS we are continuously pushing the wheel up. As soon as we let go the brake lights no longer work again.

The hazard lights work fine and we also tried keeping the headlights on and that didn't help either.

What I would like to know is what this issue can possibly be, and if it is something that we can fix ourselves. Also how much would something like this cost?

If anybody can throw out some ideas on this, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance- Josh

Welcome to the forum!

Since the CHMSL still works, as well as the hazard lights, and the brake lights work when you apply upward pressure on the steering wheel, it sounds like the issue is probably with the wiring harness in the steering column. There have been others that have posted about wiring issues with the connector and how the wires are apparently slightly too short from the factory.

Depending on your skills with basic hand tools, a wire strippers, and soldering iron, you can probably fix this yourself. I'm not sure if anyone's yet done a write-up with photos on the process though. You might try searching this forum.
