Is this an emissions problem indication? Can we ignore it? There is a power steering problem and a valve gasket problem right now... could that be the reason? Is this a ploy by Ford where the odometer is set to trigger it at 75,000 miles? Thank you for any input.... Debra
I have a '96 that had the check engine light on for some time. Actually, it would randomly turn off sometimes, then go back on. The diagnosis was first and bad ERG sensor. I replaced it and the light went off (because they re-set it). About a month later, it turned on again. Diagnosis, bad EGR valve. It is something along the lines of (E)missions (G)as (R)eturn valve, or something close to that. It will effect your catalytic converter so I would recommend taking care of it now, even though the truck may be running fine. The dealer took care of it for me for about $150, mostly labor. Been running fine ever since (knock on wood) and I have 105k miles. Hope this helps...
Wondering what you paid to have the "check engine" light checked out? My dealer charges $90 just to hook up the computer and get a reading. He did say they would confirm the computer diagnosis by checking individual components - but still seems like a lot, since the "repair" charge will be on top of that.
I shouldn't complain - it's the first time I've ever had to take the truck in for repair since I bought it new in '95. Ford Ranger XLT - what a great truck!
Doug. If it still uses the EEC-IV computer which I think they did in 95 you can just go get a scanner from Wal-mart, Sears or Autozone which is less the $30 and connect it to the plugs. It will tell you which sensor is out of range. Then you can decide if you want to fix it or have Ford Replace it for you. THis scanner has saved me hundred of dollars on diagnostics on my 95 Ford Explorer and 89 Ford Mustang. Good Luck.
My Check Engine light came on and I found resources on the web that pointed me to the Fuel Pressure regulator. The exhaust smelled awful, I didn't put my nose down there, but someone said it was running too rich. I thought I was burning antifreeze. I replaced the regulator (small part right on top in front on intake manifold) and the light went out. My engine ran much smoother at idle too. I thought I had a bad spark plug or wire.
I have an '88 F-150 4x4 with a 302. I hadn't had many problems with is, thethe motor blew. I had the motor replaced about a year ago and ever since then my check engine light has been flashing. I took it back in, and they tested it and said that it was nothing, maybe just a loose wire or something. That concerned me a little, but I have had no problems with it, just an annoying light always flashing. Any suggestions on what i should do or why the ligfht could be flashing?
Thanx,

Purchased a 1991 EB explorer 4.0 V6 2 weeks ago as a first car for teenage daughter. Truck in in excellent condition, 1 owner w/ 140k miles. It runs and drives perfect however check engine light came on while test driving. Took it to local quick-tune shop and he diagnosed bad O2 sensor. I would like to replace myself but neen help in locating as I am not familiar with this particular engine. Also has a minor sag in drivers side door which appears to be worn bottom bushing. Is the door a quick fix or should it be done by fender/body man. Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks
