tps testing

Okay ('90 FS Bronco 302 136k) Can you legitamately test the tps off the throttle body w/ the engine running? I ask becuase last night I did that & w/ the movement in the sensor the engine RPM also varied in the same direction. I reinstalled it and going to check the ref. voltage/elec. tonite. I can get it started and it usually will idle properly, but, on occasion willl quit w/ no sputtering or notice. Restarts w/ 1-2 tries. Also replacing the fuel reg. tonite. I pulled the vaccum line off while it was running and it kept running for a good 3-4 minutes after, then died. APPRECIATE all the help ya'll have provided. I was just about ready to let my neighbor, a policeman, use it for target practice. Certainly happy I didn't.

If it just dies without any hint it is going to do it, I would not think it to be the tps. And yes, you can check it with a votlmeter. It is just a variable resistor. If it just dies like that, it can be any number of things from something as simple as a bad ignition switch to any number of electrical problems. Check the computer for codes to see if any have been set.
