I just bought an 02 Explorer XLT. It has the 4.6 v8 with the third row seats and rear air. The only problem is that the a/c in the front passenger space blows hot. The driver side of the front blows very cold as does the rear, but the air coming from the 2 vents on the passenger side is warm. It does not have the auto air, just the manual controls. Any suggestions?
Have you checked under the dash on the right side to see if you have cold air blowing around there? Is the airflow from the warm side the same as the cold side (changes with the fan)?
15263 A/c Performance Temp. Difference Side-side At Registers
Some 2002 Explorer/mountaineer May Exhibit A Very Noticeable Difference In The Temperature Of The Air From The Instrument Panel Vents When The Air Conditioner Is In Operation. This May Be Due To A Low State Of Refrigerant Charge In The System. Verify The Condition And Perform Normal Preliminary Diagnosis Including Leak Testing Of The System. If No Other Concerns Are Found, Evacuate And Recharge The System. If Equipped With The Front Only (standard) Climate Control System, Charge With 0.96 Kg (34 Oz) Of Refrigerant. If Equipped With Auxiliary Climate Control (rear Air), Charge With 1.59 Kg (56 Oz.) Of Refrigerant.

I think this occurs because once freon drops low enough only part of the evaporator gets cold, and with the radical redesign of the plenum due to the avaliability of dual zone climate control, the right side is exposed to the warmer side of the evaporator. On the two I had come in with this symtom they were both low on freon, and both due to a fan clutch that fails at higher RPM when hot and the pop off valve blew off about half the freon.
hey homer have you ever heard of a problem with the a/c making a whistle noise on a 02 explorer? The whistle only comes for a couple seconds as i accelerate from a stop and then goes away. Also I can't hear a gurgling noise coming from the vents with the a/c on. Any ideas on what it could be??? thanks
jhromy, I havent seen this problem yet. Best to let the dealer listen to it if you hear it every time. Could be a vacuum leak, but thats just guessing.
