My '98 Explorer developed a leak in the power steering system. An independant mechanic advised that I need to replace the "steering rack" but suggested a dealership garage b/c he suspected this has been a recurring problem that may result in reimbursement by Ford (and a better chance for recovering expenses if the work is done by a factory wrench). Anyone experience a similar problem and if so, what results? (slow leak @ 53 K miles)
Start with the dealer to see if they will provide any assistance. If not then the price will run about twice what a non-Ford garage will charge. If Ford does ever extend the warranty on the rack at some later date, you can still get reimbursed regardless of whether or not it was done at Ford. Ford did a similar thing on my Wife's Sable's 3.8L head gasket and on the SOHC's cam-shaft tensioners and lower intake manifold o-rings. Both bulletins stated that if I paid to have the work performed prior to the announcment of the recall I could see reimbursment. I have never heard of later model Explorer having leaking racks though so I wouldn't count on Ford extending the warranty. And, unless your dealer is very Customer friendly, I wouldn't be expecting them to offer any assistance.
My 97 Explorer 2dr Sport developed a power stering rack leak at 57k miles recently.I have monitored it for about 3 months with some days only leaking a few drops to some days I see no leakage. It dribbles down the steering rod to the lower a arm and then leaks to the ground.I was hoping to hear about a free fix but I may be trading for a new 4 door soon so I might just leave it..A little power steering stop-leak in the resevoir may be enough fix for now...
