Question 92 clutch problem

1992 Ford Ranger 4x2 with 2.3L engine and 5 speed manual transmission. 135,000 miles, no AC and no power steering. I am having poor clutch disengagement and resulting hard shifting. The shop added a little fluid to the reservoir last oil change and it is still looking full. I always park on concrete and never see any leaking. I don't know what may have been done before as I haven't had the pickup all that long. Where should I start? Is there probably internal bypass leaking in the hydraulic clutch as there seems to be no external leaking?

The slave cyl as well as the master could have a seep, its not noticable, to check the master cyl, look under the dash where the rod runs from the clutch petal to the clutch master cyl. You may see a drop of fluid there, as well as a stain on the carpet. And, the clutch may be about to go out too.

I will assume that you can shift it ok when its not running. If there is no fluid loss and the pedal feels ok, you prolly just need a new clutch. Since you're there you may as well replace the slave.

Unhappy

Yes, it shifts when shut off. I always have it in gear before I start it to make things easier. But even then it feels a little too stiff. Getting it in 1st gear at a stoplight is the biggest pain. This is the first stick shift I have driven in 30 years, so I really don't know what the real feel of the clutch pedal should be. I just had to flush the radiator and put in a new thermostat, so not really looking forward to throwing another $300 at a $500 pickup.

yeah mine was about $550 when I bought it but I have dumped about $1500 in parts the first year, still cheaper than a car payment.
