The voltage gauge and all lights(Headlights, Domelight)on my 91 Explorer flutters at idle, and decreases slightly but still flutters at high RPM's. I asumed it was the voltage regulator, and replaced the alternator and regulator as one unit. This solved the problem for about a day, but now it's returned and I can't figure it out. Can anyone help?
Did you ever find the problem that caused this? I'm having the same problem. I went through the troubleshooting of the alternator and it all checks out, but I still have the flutter.
I had to smog check the vehicle a couple of months ago, and the mechanic could not get a good signal off the spark plug wires (Borg Warner's). He said bleeding wires could be inducing a voltage into the alternator circuit, causing the problem. I haven't tried new wires yet, but I think I may give Splitfires a try.
