I have a 2001 F250, with 73,000 miles. Last week, after sitting for a day, it wouldn't start. I drained the fuel filter, and for the first time heard it gurgling, like air was bubbling inside replacing the departing fuel. I replaced the filter with a new one, and it cranked right up and ran fine for another 6 days. Yesterday it would not start again, and I heard the gurgling again while draining the filter. I replaced the filter again, but this time it made no difference, and the gurgling is still there.
Does anyone have an idea what the problelm could be. It seems it is related to air in the system.
Air in system is very common for 1999-2003. It's a rather involved fix but WELL worth the effort. Once done you won't believe how much healthier your engine will sound.

Also www.texastowncar.com. You have to register but it worth it for the educational reading about diesel cackle being caused by air in the fuel. www.dieselinnovations.com sells kits for fixing the problem.
I just went through this myself on my truck and it really makes a difference. Smoother, quieter idle. Quite a bit more power between 1500 and 2200 rpm. And the diesel growl is not any quieter but just more even and healthy sounding.
