Lightbulb Sleep?

Sleep is one of my all-time favorite things to do. During the day I can’t get enough, but night time is different story. Tried everything but I always end up lying in bed wide awake for at least an hour. So now I have a play list of Trance/Techno music (Yea, yea I know BUT..) on my comp that I play during the night. I wake up more rested now and in a much better mood. That’s saying a lot considering my bed might as well be a sheet of plywood being as being uncomfortable as it is. I lay down and I'm usually asleep within a few minutes, if I don't feel like having music play all night I set it to shut down the program after however long. Sure beats ending up addicted to sleeping pills though. .........Oh man it's 5...I see Mike W is up as usual though.

So what do you do when you can't sleep?

I work midnight shifts, i don't have much of a problem sleeping now. I get home about 8 am and hit the pillow, somedays I won't get to bed till about 2 in the afternoon. If I can't sleep I throw in a good movie or head to the garage to actually do something. Usually then I get tired and go back to bed.

Taking naps in the middle of the day really screws with your sleeping cycle. The best way to sleep is to stay consistant....go to bed at 11 wake up at 8...something like that. If you go to bed and wake up at all different times, it really messed with your body.

I have to be at work at 7:30 so I get up about 6. I seem to function best on about 7 hours of sleep so I go to sleep between 10-11PM. I rarely take a daytime nap because it messes up my routine. It is a routine too, I follow this schedule even when I am off, or on vacation.

I'm with Justin and Chris--a regular schedule helps alot. In my case, though, I often take an afternoon nap on the weekends. Rarely do I have a hard time going to sleep at night, as my job (painting contractor) is both physically and mentally challenging most days, and by the time my head hits the pillow, I'm out. Seven to eight hours later, I'm good to go for another round.

I need a definition of Trance/Techno music. I rarely have any trouble sleeping. Sometimes I wake up too early and feel like a zombie for the rest of the day.

I don't mind listening to techno every now and then. About once a month is enough for me.

I usually only have time for 4-6 hours of sleeps but that seems to be all I need. One day it'll probably catch up with me.

Naps during the day can be the best thing for you sometimes...power naps? Sounds corny, but I have an hour lunch break, and when I just started working, I was hurtin by 3 in the afternoon. I was fresh out of college, and sunrise and me were no strangers to eachother, usually that's when I knew I needed to call it a night and go to bed. So you can imagine what an 8 hour workday was doing to me. I started to bring my lunch, eat it, and sleep the rest of the lunch break in my Bronco under a tree. You'd be surprised what a 30-45 minute rest can do for you. Bring a small alarm clock, or just use the one in your cell phone. It's a different kind of sleep...at night you know you have hours to sleep...in the afternoon, when you're tired, you can discipline yourself to actually get good sleep in only 45 minutes. It's no substitute for a good nights sleep, but it's a helpful handicap.

Amen, jdmorg. There are times where I have to just find someplace quiet (not always easy on a jobsite) and just zone out for 15-30 minutes, or I will be totally worthless the rest of the day. After that, then I have to do something to get my blood pumping to wake back up.

Justin and Jason: I know the intermitten and irregualr sleep patterns are not good for you so i don't do it often but once in a while I have stuff to do and I have to sleep like this. When quail season comes in I'll most likely try to sleep evenings and hunt days but usually I try to go to sleep as son as I get home (8 am) and then I get up about 1:30 -3:00 pm which gives me 5 1/2 to 7 hours sleep. Just right for a 24 year old farmboy.

Sleep is like quickness, it's a mental thing.
