Tight steering

On my new toy...its takes a good bit of effort to move wheels when on the go...40 mph about...not immense amt of effort, but more than on my other trucks...Suggestions ????

Also has a bad shimmy/shudder on takeoff till about 2-25 mph or so....it does have a bad u joint in ctr which squeaks bigtime....would the u joint be a cause of the shudder ???

Its an FE/C/matic rig/3/4 ton

Also seems late dropping back to 1st....about 5 mph it kicks down...kinda hard to me it seems like....

Thanks for the pointers/advice...cs65

Would timing being off cause the shudder too as the idle is way high....bout 1000-1250 hot???

It sounds like tight kingpins or a steering box problem. Lift both front wheels off the ground and PROPERLY SUPPORT THEM then try turning the wheels to see where binding/slop etc. might be.

The u joint could cause the shudder if it is really bad, like it sounds it is.

The late downshift is likely a bad vacuum modulator for the trans. or a bad vacuum hose to the vac. mod. which could also cause the high idle(vacuum leak)

Thanks Putt, the ujoint is missing the needle brgs on one side of the cross....but no clunk going into gear either direction....weird....
As to the downshift issue...thanks loads

I can finally go to town on this sucker....gonna need a motor rebuild....can turn over w/o pulling up for increased tension on fan belt....Oh well....such is life....but I havent seen a box this nice in years!!!!That has me soooo happy....

Will keep ya all posted.....cs65

The tires can make a big difference in the turning also. most people are putting raidials on the trucks usually 230X75X15. The stock tire on the half ton was a 7.00X15 which is bias these tires really make a difference in the turning. Bridgestone offers a 7.00 X 15 in the Vsteel series and I believe Yokahama also offers this size in a radial. I am running bias tires on my 65 at the moment and they make it steer a lot better. expecially at slow speeds.

I apoligize I missed the camper special part. It came stock with 9.50 X 16-5. The 16 is a nicer tire but most radials have a wider track and this makes for harder turning. by design a radial bulges out on the bottom where a bias has straight walls. I am not sure about other tires for this application.
