I want to keep my 300 I6 in my 1970 F-350 dually, but i'd like to switch from manual to automatic transmission. Is that feasable? I mean, can u just swap my 4 speed to a C6 auto with the bellhousing being the same, i just don't think im that lucky. And also, do i have to switch the flywheel to a flex-plate. PLEEEEEZE, help....
you will have to swap the flywheel to a flex plate. you will need a tranny from a 240/300, or 289,302,351w. you will also need a driveshaft, [front section only], a radiator with a tranny cooler in the bottom, and a steering column.
make sure you get all the nuts and bolts, and all the shift linkage parts also, that way if any are differant you will have them.
looking at Mac's catalogue, radiators available for a 1970 f with a 300 does not specify automatic or standard shift, only 73+ models do, i understand the need for transmission cooling, i just changed my 4r100 in my 2001 F-350 but is it possible that the original c4 tranny did not NEED a transmission cooler?
Im pretty confident that automatic was an option on 1970 models, but im not so sure about the radiator as it seems that mounting flange location, air/no air does make for different versions. My original is a rear flange, no air version.
i have 3 differant year trucks, 69, 70, and 72. all have the tranny cooler in the rad. i have seen earlier trucks without the rad cooler. they had a cooler mounted on the tranny. i dont think they worked very good though, if they had i think they would still be using them.
Parts for older vehicles sometimes become generic versions that work for the greatest number of applications. You need a transmission cooler and the radiator mounted ones serve two purposes. They cool and heat also.
I transmission from a 300-6 would have the best option since the valve body etc would be set up for the proper shift points. You could even go with an AOD and have an OD for economy.
I thought that c4 auto had OD as a standard feature, for sure the c6 does, can anyone confirm this. Excellent point, Torque1st, i never thought about the shift points, too used to comp. controlled new trannies that are so to speak plug-and-play.
I hope rad w/ oil cooler will fit into current mount.
OD functions within the C-6 and C-4 did not become available until the early '80s.
I am putting a Doug Nash OD unit behind the '69 C-6 going into my '66 F-100.
There were no OD C4's or C6's. The AOD is the only "dumb" overdrive auto tranny available that I know of. The later models like the E4OD that shares a few common parts with the C6 is electronically controlled but I hear you can get a brain box. The AOD will work just fine behind a 300-6 or even a mild 351W and is available at a much lower cost than any of the other options. HD versions of the AOD are available from some builders.
