Question How About a Newbee Guide for Upgrades

Hello I am New to the Diesel High Performance world. Done gas engines before, but I'm at everyone’s Mercy while I learn about little tricks. I have a 1997 F250, Auto, 4.11 Rear end Gears, and 150,000 miles.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

I was told by a local garage that Hops Up those Ram Things (Dodge), 50 H/P is all that my old heap was good for. I find that hard to believe, any held would be appreciate.<o></o>

do a search for 10k mod, shimming the fuel regulator, Tymar Intake. Not together but seperate mods and that will get you the cheap things you can do.

Next is an exhaust, and you'll need gauges before you get into chips and stuff that add alot of power.

In a nutshell, here's the commonly recommended order for doing things:
The wisest thing would be to add three important gauges- boost, EGT (Exhaust Gas Temperature), and tranny temp, then start laying the groundwork for more power. Believe me, there's a lot more than 50hp hiding under the hood. The groundwork consists of a better intake system. There are a handful of good ones, but my recommendation would be a TYMAR. It flows more air than you can possibly use, filters very well, and is the cheapest aftermarket intake on the market, by far. You'll also want to replace your downpipe. The flattened one from the factory is a major source of restriction. Restriction = Heat. Heat = Bad. You'd be wise to also increase the size of the exhaust system. Your stock system is 3.5". Increasing that to 4" will reduce temps considerably, and will help you unleash more power later. Once you've got the foundation layed, you can safely add a chip or tuner. Given that you've already got intake, downpipe, and exhaust work done, you'll be able to get a very noticeable increase in power. After driving that setup for a while, adding propane injection, or water/methanol injection later will kick it up a notch. A very big notch. Turbine housings, aftermarket injectors, the list goes on and on. How much power do you want? There's a way to get it, if your pockets are deep enough.

Just wanted to add that I made my own intake for $3 plus the cost of the filter. All i did was use a 45 degree bend piece of 3" (4" outter diameter) PVC and a K&N filter and it did wonders. Probably not as good as the other homemade ones with a 4" piece of exhaust pipe with a 45 degree bend in it because the one i have now uses the stock duct from the turbo up to what used to be the air box and the PVC just connects the duct to the filter, its ribbed so there may be alittle turbulence.

Thanks for info, after reading other threads, I take that intercooler would be waste of money for now. I will do the down pipe , and the intake first. Where is a good place and price to get the TYMAR induction. Could I run a 50hp chip without Gauges?

That depends, how well do you think you can read your EGT's via ESP? Not very well? I'd get some gauges then... More power is nice, but if you melt something (and it's a very real danger, trust me), then you're gonna kick yourself for not getting some gauges sooner...

I agree with Rancha, gauges cheap, rebuilt PSD not cheap. If you want to make it last gauges, then airflow, then fuel just like Quad said.

The only place to get the Tymar is from Tymar Performance. The phone number is 509-922-8785. They also have an email but phone is much quicker for a response.

I would not run any chip without gauges personally.

My thoughts are: Air in, Exhaust out,,,gauges,,,pick me ups. I believe those will get you what you are after. Take pride in your ride and good luck.

Thanks Guys, Gauges first it is. I just caught this bug in the the last month or so, I have been reeding this forum, and the Diesel stop. I have been in the aviation field for the last twenty plus years, and I'm impressed. You guys have been busy, while been wasting all that time on those spark plug engines, and Big round engines that burn kerosene. Dual HPOP, HX Mode, 530's, 50 psi on H-2's, looks like a manual for a Boeing, when I read your signatures. Now all I need is a Large pile on $$$, so I can turn it into a small pile of $
