Yesterday I removed everything from the muffler back to the tip of the exhaust. I still have that 2 foot piece that goes out of the cat attached. Is there anything wrong with just putting a down tip at the end of this, or will a cat-back system be necessary.
supprisingly, it is not that loud at all. You can not even tell that I removed the muffler unless I get aggressive, and then it only lets its v8 engine low rumble sound come out. I thought that it sounded pretty cool. In fact, I had to roll down my windows to hear it.
Apparently the 04 and the superduty cab is a LOT better than doing that in my 03 Ex...
It was pretty good around town... and sounded SWEET, even got compliments from the dealership service staff....
but the rumble on long trips would resonate in the Ex's big interior and would get very tiresome after about 3 hours or so...
I had my muffler swapped out the other day for a piece of mandrel bent pipe and it is just a tad louder than stock. I kept the stock pipe all the way back to the tip to keep the soot off the truck.
The truck seems a bit more responsive and hopefully the mpg goes up at least 1 mpg... I hope.
Jdadamsjr, from what i have heard when you run exhaust like that on an Ex the enormus interior acts like a big resonator and amplifies the sound. Zenitram if you really want your truck to scream lose the cat too. Thats how I run my 7.3 cut off right before the cat, 36 inch chrome stack top dumping out under the bed. It is a little loud and the black smoke coats everything, but I still like it.
My bro did the straight pipe on his 6.0 and he's upset with the results. It sounds like a Mustang, no turbo whine/whistle at all....just an annoying resonance. I am not too fond of the sound either, sounds funny on a diesel. But everyone has different tastes, this is just my opinion.
Well, I just thought I'd try the muffler delete first since it was the easy "solution"...
saved my stock muffler just in case (but it was so heavy it sank 30 foot into the dirt )
But that in itself probably shaved .2 off my acceleration time from the less weight and less restriction !
Ran it like that for a while but the two long trips I went on helped me to decide that the Ex and it didn't get along with my ears
So went to an inexpensive aluminized turbo back with a 4 inch center flow thru muffler and like it a LOT...
Lot's of turbo whine, and a little rumble...
