Disc brake Pads

I now have 80,000 miles on my 01 F-350 and I tow a 13,000lb 5th wheel. I had my front disc brakes replaced last winter with 72,000 miles on the truck. Now that I have reached 80,000 miles I was sure it would be time to do the rear brakes. I was wrong. I decided to do it myself and when I pulled the pads off I discovered that I still had over 50% of my pads left. These are the original pads and I was amazed that I had that much pad left. I use an exhaust brake on a regular basis. I atribute the life of my pads to that fact, but I was wondering what milage all of you might be getting on a set of brake pads that do not use a exhaust brake?

On every vehicle I have owned, the rears outlast the fronts by at least 2:1. The reason is the front brakes do most of the work under normal conditions.

Pikachu,
This I know. My question was, what milage are those of you who are not using an exhaust brake getting on your pads?

I got about 46K on my front (no exhaust brake). I also had to have the rotors turned as they were warped. I have heard this is common on these trucks or at least the early SD's.

Thumper4995,
Thanks for the response. I did not need the rotors turned even at 80,000 miles. This surprised me. I was sure that towing the weight I am, I would need to have this done.
I think I could have gotten another 15-20,000 miles on my original pads. But I had it all apart anyway so I went ahead and installed new ones. I wonder what others have been getting on longetivity of their pads.

Oh, sorry. I just quit smoking, so I have the attention span of a hyperactive 5 year old without his ritalin.... Must not have gotten that far in the original post...

Thumper4995,

Have you had the rear pads replaced and if so at what milage? If not what is the present milage on your rig?

I have a little over 102,000 miles on all original brakes. The front ones will be replaced this week (it definately needs the rotors turned). The back ones are still holding up fine, but I'll replace them anyways. Never had exhaust brake, but I downshift alot.

There is no hard and fast rule on the life of brakes. Brake longevity is completly dependant on how the vehicle is driven.
