Jumpin' Tach........

I Have A '97 4.0 4x4 Xcab Auto. Problem Is This: Tach Does Not Register Correct Rpm's. Start Up All Good...run About 5mins.then Stop At A Red Lite And Let It Idle Tach Shows Less Than 500 Rpms.start Off From Green Lite Tach Sort Of Sticks Around 1000rpms And Then Jumps To Proper Rpms Then Nose Dives Back Down To 500rpm.if I Run At A Constant Speed The Tach Sticks Around 1000,when I Mash The Gas It Will Jump Briefly To Around What It Should Be Then Goes Back Down. Can Anyone Give Me Some Insight Into This? What Should I Check?

Over The Past Several Days It Seems To Be Getting Worse. Do I Need To Replace The Whole Tach Or What?

Sounds like the tach is sticking. it may need to have the pivoit point replaced. a speedo shop should be abe to tell you. It might be cheaper to just replace it.
