Angry EGR trouble???

Hi All,
I have a 1994 Explorer and we just changed the rod and main bearings in it and put the engine back in and the darn thing has no guts. It stumbles on acceleration and the plugs are gas soaked. I took it and had the codes read and it said that the EGR DPFE volts are out of range, EGR insufficient flow, DPFE EGR sensor below minimum voltage, and HO2S (sensor) system lean bank 1 and HO2S (sensor) system rich bank 2. I need some help on what all of this means and how to test some of the things listed if I can test them.

What were the codes, and what part of the test did each come from (KOEO hard fault, continuous memory, KOER)? The usual approach is to start with the KOEO hard fault codes, then resolve the KOER codes, then resolve the continuous memory codes.

FWIW, you can pull the codes yourself (no need to take it somewhere to read the codes) with nothing more than a paper clip. See www.fordfuelinjection.com and www.dalidesign.com/hbook/eectest.html.

One thought based on the fact that you just installed the engine and those two O2 sensor codes. Did you get the two O2 sensors plugged into the right plugs? When you say that the plugs are gas soaked, did you check all the plugs? I remember seeing one guy who had got the two O2 sensors backwards, and he had all kinds of trouble. The natural result is for one bank to run really rich while the other runs really lean, because the feedback loops are crossed up.

The plugs

The two plugs on the right rear were gas soked. We changed the plugs last night and there was a little change.

I have ordered the sensor from a parts house friend and they said that if it doesn't work I can bring it back.

I might try changing the o2 sensors as soon as it starts raining.

I really appreciate your help with this one!!

OOPS messed up with the previous message!

The part I messed up on is the codes and how they read so let me start over.
KOEO codes are as follows:
335 EGR PDFE volts out of range.
KOER code 136 but it says no definition but when I looked it up it says HO2S21 indicate lean.
Also, KOER code 326 DPFE EGR sensor below min. voltage.

And now for the memory codes:
Memory code 172 HO2S sensor system lean (Bank1).
Memory code 176 HO2S sensor system lean (Bank 2).
Memory code 177 HO2S sensor system rich ( Bank2).
Memory Code332 EGR flow insufficient.
Memory code 157 says no definition but I looked it up and it says that it means MAF curcuit below min. voltage.

Maybe i just need to clear the codes? I have no idea. PLEASE HELP!!!

1st) Take a deep breath and relax. Close your eyes and visualize a quiet mountain meadow......
2nd) We should be able to fix all these codes, but we have to take them one at a time in systematic fashion. The best place to start is with the KOEO code. Because the engine isn't running, KOEO codes almost always point to sensor or electrical faults. I'm not real good with EGR codes, because I've never had to deal with them personally, but here goes. Start with a wiring diagram. Inspect the wiring going to the DPFE and the PCM. Make sure there's power where there should be. Make sure the vacuum hoses to the DPFE are intact and in good condition. Figure out and resolve the KOEO 335, then clear the continuous memory codes (disconnect jumper wire anytime during KOEO or continuous memory code output), road test the vehicle, and repeat the self-tests and see what code(s) come back. Repeat this process until KOEO test comes back "pass (111)".
3) Now resolve any KOER codes.
4) If there are any continuous memory codes still being triggered, now deal with them.

One useful resource will be a complete set of circuit "pinpoint" tests. DIY manuals rarely have these. A good manual (many libraries will carry Mitchell or Motor) should have them, or try a factory service manual (I've seen them for ~$15 on ebay). Someone justed posted a link (it was also posted last year) to a pdf file containing Mitchell's article for a '95 Explorer, which should give some idea of what to do on your '94. The file is called gtest.pdf.

Good luck, and let us know how we can help.

Cool egr problems

I am also having problems with my egr. I am getting an error code of 332 egr valve opening not detected. I have replaced the egr and the egr vaccum regulator and I am still getting this code any ideas what I can do to fix this problem?

Thanks Mike

I have not gotten anywhere with mine...

I have not gotten anywhere with mine cause I am waiting for the new DPFE. It is supposed to be here today. I just talked to my dad and he says that I may have an intake valve stuck open and it is making it backfire also. I think I have too many porblems. I will see if I can find a test procedure for the PDFE and I will post it here for you. From what I have read they are not the best from the factory. And of course mine is factory. I will let you know.Thanks...Kris

Oh yeah...

I forgot to post on here that I have gotten all of the codes to go away instead of the 335 EGR DPFE volts out of range but I am working on that. Thanks mrshorty!!!
