I have a 2001 super duty 4x4 with a 5.4. When i go to start it after it has sat all day it won’t start until i have tried several times. it will catch and run at between 500 and 1000 rpm then die it will do this several time, then run normal. When this happened there was a definite smell of fuel and visible smoke. It has been hot and humid in my area lately. It has only happened in the am once and 5-6 times in the evening. Thank you for any help you can give
Oh, it's probably your Idle Air Control motor going out. Do a little searcharoo on "IAC" for more details. The IAC opens up a small air bypass valve to feed enough air to start the motor and to keep it on at idle. When that little electric motor stops working, very little air is getting into the engine as the throttle body butterfly is closed when at idle position. To see if it is indeed an IAC problem, you can try holding the accelerator pedal down a bit to allow more air in the engine. If it starts and stays on while you're doing this, then the IAC is most likely the problem. This usually happens when the engine is cold. The IAC is mounted behind the throttle body, facing the passenger side of the firewall.
