Right now my rear brakes don't work. Long story on the cause, but I replaced the master cylinder, and now the proportioning valve isn't allowing fluid to get to the rear brakes. Could anyone give me a hint on how to reset this thing? According to the chilton's there is a procedure to reset the valve, but I can't get that to work. Should I just pull it apart and check for problems, or is there something I can do?
I had this problem on a 83 Bronco and I finally ended up bypassing the prop. valve, worked for me, maybe not the best idea, but not the dumbest thing either
if its stuck real bad sometimes i drive vehicle in a safe parking lot and drive about 15 mph and then slam the brakes hard.It may take a time or twobut it usally will reset the valve. you will know it reset when the pedal goes to the floor
pumping the pedal while standing still doesnt seem to have enough force. For safty sake you would use an empty parking lot.I have had to do this many times over the years and when it frees up you still have enough brake pedal to return back to further bleed the system
That still makes no logic, the brakes don't rotate or any thing they just put pressure on the rotor and drums, moving or not moving has no effect on any of those parts other than the surface of the pads. The valve wouldn't know the differance, there is nothing there for it to even know the truck was moving or standing still all it sees is pressure from you standing on the pedel, and a 1000psi is a 1000psi. In any case this is still the wrong way to center the valve and all one has to do is crawl under the truck and pull it out till its centered than finish bleeding the brakes.
You could simply install an aftermarket valve. The stock ones are expencive unless you go to a junk yard.
You will lose the "Brake" light, but if you cant tell that you've lost your front or rear brakes by the way the thing stops, something's wrong. heh..
I had one give out on me, so I dont really trust the stock ones. Shooting down a hill backwards with both feet standing on the pedal isnt too fun. And I'm sure popping it into first to stop the vehicle wasnt good on the transmission.
Anyhow, somewhere on the valve is a little needle looking thing. You need to grab that and pull it out. Have someone hold it, or hold it with vice grips and bleed your brakes that way.
If your rear circuit is off, then just release a tiny bit of fluid from the front circuit and it should center the valve. That is what I have done before. They do sell little plugs to insert into the equalizer valve while you do a brake job.
