Just bought an F250 5.8L - very happy with the truck.
Have noticed that this engine pings lightly but consistently on acceleration...as in whenever I give it gas. I've tried premium fuel and that does not seem to make a difference.
Had the truck in for a full tune up, new wires, distributor, etc, had the computer read and "reset to factory values". It drives fine, but pings.
I'm worried about engine damage. It has 90K on it and I would like to preserve this engine.
What have I overlooked on service?
What year? i would check the timing should be at 10*btdc with spout connector removed. what wires & and plugs did they use? could have a bad coil. i suggest getting some Seafoam and run it through the motor and gas tank. it may help as well. another thing it could be is the damn cat converter is shot. mine is and was making a similar ping sound. does it do it right at take off or when you floor it?
Does it when I do heavy acceleration. What is Seafoam? I'll check the wires and the plugs. I just passed E-check so I don't think the converter is shot. It would have shown up on emissions testing, no?
possibly. i would check your timing. i would bet thats part of the problem. seafoam is stuff that cleans engine deposits and cleans out your fuel system. its been talked about in here alot and many like the results. i have not used it yet though need to probably.
