Hello, I have a question for anyone knowing anything about 351m/400's. I have a 1978 F250 with one of these two engines, not sure which though. When i got the truck it was not running well and i was told that it burned quite a bit of oil. I planned on getting it rebuilt but somebody told me that the heads off of M engines could not be rebuilt and the motor was a waste of time for that reason. I wanted to know if this was true or not. Any info would be much appreciated, thanks.

Take a look at the VIN code, if its an S (4th character) its a 400, if its an H, its a 351M.
M heads are rebuildable, they fit the 400 and 351C (for the sake of confusion, don't worry about the C)
Personally, I'd rebuild it as a 400 with the addition of a 400 crankshaft and pistons... With a mild Comp Cams 255DEH, you could make some serious power.
Thankyou for the info. I will take your advice and definetly rebuild the motor. I wanted to rebuild it with more than stock power, good for doing some heavy towing. If you know of any good websites or threads or have any advice for making a reliable yet powerful motor any suggestions would be much appreciated.
