My daughters 95 explorer still dies occasionaly. It is the 6 cylinder and I have replaced Iac valve, plugs, plug wires, fuel filter, and the fuel pump. It still will die but will start back. Any suggestions would be appreciated since this has been going on for awhile.
Thanks
my 91 does it sme times it only does it in the heat not the cold after it dies it will turn right over and run mine only does it like if i pull out of a parking lot when applying the breaks does yours do that? but will not do it anymore it only does it a couple of times a month
Any diagnostic codes, check engine light come on?
O2 sensors?
MAF sensor clean?
Did you Disconnect battery for 20 mins to let computer reset?
Assume air filter clean
Notice any difference with differing fuels? Ever done fuel induction clean or Sea Foam treatment?
No codes, check engine does not come on,I cleaned the MAF and it has a new air filter. I tried the sea foam and have it scheduled for injector cleaning at the dealer. Not changed the o2's yet.thanks I will try them and the cleaning and hope that does it
Does it stall at stop lights? Will it start to stall, shudder, and then run normally? Is it woese with the new fuel pump? You could have a rare problem with the fuel pressure regulator. Some of these have a spring that is off center. It then wears only on one side of the valve seat. When a large bevel is worn on one side, the valve slips to the side and sticks open. Ysually under high vacuum conditions (foot off the gas). Found mine by monitoring fuel pump current when driving. When not stuck, pressures are normal. Usually can't be found in a shop.
It was doing this before the new fuel pump. I just cleaned the MAF sensor and it did not fix it. I changed the air filter and pcv also. It seems to have a slight hesitation when pushing on the accelerator. Almost like it might quit and then it picks up and accelerates. It even does it when parked and giving it gas. It has always died when idleing. As soon as it picks up when giving it gas it runs fine, its just when you first give it gas. If you apply the accerator slowly it will pick right up but if you do it quickly it will hesitate.
Check to see if you have good vacuum on the line that goes to the bottom of the pressure regulator. The regulator uses a drop in vacuum to boost fuel pressure just like an accelerator pump used to do. I have heard of a coupling cracking between the vacuum tree and the regulator. This would cause higher than usual pressure which the computed would compensate for by reducing injector time so no codes. But, when you needed that pressure boost it wouldn't be there. Have you ever done a pressure test?
Something else you might want to check out is the computer. I was having some serious idle problems(low idle was irratic and no high idle when first started in the morning) with my '94. Had it replaced, no more problems. Sounds like that might be your culprit.
I have not checked the pressure. I will check tomorrow for leaks. It seems to idle fine its just the hesitation and the occasional engine dieing when idleing while in drive. She said it stalled while waiting at a light but it started right back up.
Did you ever find out the cause of the stalling? My '92 X (4.0L 2WD automatic XLT) is doing exactly the same thing and I have replaced fuel pump assembly (gauge died), plugs and wires (time to change them anyway), and new IAC (cleaning the old one didn't help but that was a good post on the subject). Intake has been cleaned around the butterfly, MAF was replaced about a year ago. It's not throwing any codes and there doesn't appear to be any vacuum leaks. The engine is fairly new (50K on it). On one of these threads, someone mentioned checking the fuel regulator - where is it on a 92? Anything else I can check?

No I have not got it figured out yet. It goes next week to have the injectors cleaned. Hopefully that will solve it. I am not sure where your fuel regulator is. Since I have already replaced almost everything on this I hope the cleaning will solve the problem. Good luck on yours.
I have already replaced mine, IAC valve also. Just about everything has been changed. The hesitation has improved with all the new parts. So I am hoping having the injectors cleaned will finish off the problem.
