how far is your commute?
just curious to know how far you all commute to work.
i'm interviewing for a new job and everything looks great....except the commute. i'd be looking at approximately 150 miles/day...2.4 hours/day...5 days/week(+some saturdays). don't know if i can handle it. we purchased a home not too long ago and moving is not an option right now. but it sure is a great career opportunity with a substantial pay increase.
what do you all think?

Do you have kids at home? If the longer commute is going to keep you from spending valuable time with your kids then you might want to look at a different job. Something to think about.
My longest commute is about 2 miles.

My commute is less than 30 minutes. My wife's commute is 45 minutes.
2.4 hours is a bit long by anyone's standards. Heck, for .6 more hours, I could be at my buddy's place. I know some people who don't travel that far to their getaway cabin.
I think if you're serious about the job, take it. Try it out for a while. If the commute is too much, look into maybe boarding a train or a bus. If you really don't want to do that, and you really like your new job, then I guess moving is the only option.

Well...I think it would be a bit much for everyone to list their commute times....lets just discuss your commute and carreer opportunity..maybe some suggestions to help you deal with it...
I think the biggest concern would be gas usage, and I have a strong feeling that you have a heavy ford truck in your driveway. My uncle moved to maine and had a 3-31/2 hr commute to work in MA, but that was only twice a week (24/hr shifts for 48 hr on a week...firefighter). As long as there isn't massive traffic jams causing you stress...it should be ok if you have a comfortable ride. You might consider a small car if you don't already have one to help on the gas usage.

Take my advice- please! I had a commute of 1hr each way, and it was NOT worth it! The pay was the best I ever made, but the cost to my family life was way too high!!! If you're that valuable to a job away from home, you're that valuable to some job close to home! Don't lose your priorities: Family #1, everything else falls in after that.Just my .02

112 miles a day, and in my ride that translates to $425 of premium fuel per month. Silverback, if the work was in my home town I'd be glad to take it.

20 min here. 25 miles a day. used to drive 30 one way. it wasnt too bad in the mornings, but coming home when youve got a long drive and youve already had a long day can really leave you tired by the time you get home. my .02c Dave

If you are communting more than an hour 1 way, you really have to look at your priorities and the fact you are wearing out a vehicle.
150 miles a day = 36,000 miles a year roughly. In 5 years that is 180,000 miles.
Time wise you are losing 12 hours a week - add that to your paid time = say 40 hours a week - which becomes 52 hours a week (and you did say some Saturdays). So take what you make a week and divide it by 52 - that is your real pay per hour.
Then think about this - 12 hours a week becomes about 600 hours a year (base on 50 weeks, rule of thumb in business) which equals 15 Weeks at 40 hours. OR alternatively it becomes 25 days at 24 hours a day.
So what else could you do with 25 days a year?
On a personal note, my Brother-in-Law drove about 3 hours a day (dependant on traffic) and he was well sick of it after 6 months and pretty much hated it after a year. But he got lucky and got a new job, about the same distance away, but he was able to move to a place much closer and now drives about 7 minutes and he loves it as he gets more time to be active and with hang out with friends.
Oh - my commute right now is about three foot-steps!
Just My Two Cents!

Me and by best bud (my dog!) walk 15 minutes to get to work everyday. Daisy rides with me in my service truck and gets out many times during the day. Since I transferred to a small town, my stress level dissolved away! ...Terry

Six or eight miles each way. About 10 minutes of country roads.
Once was 75 round trip. Hated it. 0430 wake up for a 12 hour high stress Emergency Medical Dispatch kinda day.
Now its the same line of work, less stress. Way less...from 200+ calls a shift............now I had 2 calls in 2 hours 8 minutes.
Lovin it now.

Around here (Washington,D.C.) my 7 miles one way commute can take about 10 minutes or up to 45 minutes! Try being consistently on time with that big a variable! 150 miles a day would certainly become a chore rather quickly, but you could pass the miles with some good coffee and XM Radio!

70 miles round trip every 3 rd day.
By the way peppy 0 calls in 3 shifts .72 hrs.
Although I do see the sun coming up crossing the bridges going to work. working on an island does have its privledges.
