how far is your commute?

that new 04 that you bought, subtract the value that your going to lose after putting 30+ thousand miles on it a year, from your raise in salarly. i put 50K + a year on mine, i know what a truck is worth after 4-5yrs, you might be able to deduct the miles on your taxes...worth a try....do you have a back-up car?
in case yours breaks down or needs service, figure on deducting that cost also from your salarly too..... and don't foget about tires, oil changes, car washes,misc...ect....i don't mean to be a bearer of bad news..but you need to figure all these things into your decision to take the job or not..

I use to have to commute about 4 miles to a Jiffy Lube, now I commute about 1/4 mile to a Grease Monkey, yeah I'm a grease monkey but $8.50/hr just turning 18 and with min. wage where I live being $5.25 I'm proud of it.

some good advice here. thx a bunch.
breaking down the numbers really puts it all into perspective. lucky for my wife and i, we have no children at the moment. but who knows right? we already rarely see each other, since she works 3-11 shifts and i work days...so, i suppose we're ok there. the drive would be an easy 55 min. one way without any hangups or traffic....but i think hour and 15 would be more accurate given that i'll be travelling through olympia and part of tacoma.
my current job gets me out of bed 5 days/week between the hours of 2am and 5am...so i'm used to rising before the sun. yes, i have definetely thought about the mileage i'd put on a vehicle....and no way am i going to run my 04 fx4 that much. my wife has a vw diesel (40+mpg), i've thought about buying another, or something similar.
another thing is how many hours/week i'd be putting in. the job calls for 50 hours/week on the average. so adding that 12 hours in commute time a week...i'm looking at 62 hours a week to doorstep to doorstep.
i agree that family and home come first, but it's going to be hard to pass up a 20k increase in pay.
i dunno, i'm still young and dumb.....guess i'll see if they offer me the job or not and go from there.
thx again

right on bigrigfixer....i kind of thought after reading your post that you mistook my earlier post. 2.5 hours would most certainly be out of the question for me!

I drive about 12 miles each way - but I work noon till 8:30 pm (or whenever the work is done) so traffic isn't an issue with me. When I worked regular days in the same area (8am till 5pm) it took me about 45 min each way in traffic - now I average about 15 min each way and my gas mileage has gone way up. I think I'm really going to like this in the winter, I can recall a few nights going home from work at 5pm when it took 2 1/2 hours to get home........

I drive about 80 miles round trip, time of about 1 hr. each way, give or take.
Some days, you'd like nothing better than to sleep in the truck, just to avoid the drive. Most days though, it's not that big of a deal.
The ranger doesn't seem to mind, allthough it does help rack up the miles, don't forget to factor that cost into the budget when thinking about how much better the salary is.
The part that makes the long drive worse is working 12 hour shifts. Makes for an awful long day, when you're "normal" day keeps you out 14 hours. Hard to have much of a life outside work if you do it every day (I don't, I work 7/14 days, so it's not as bad as it sounds.)

My commute to the warehouse is less than ten miles, which I drive 3 or 4 days per week, depending on my schedule. Of course, the farm is right outside my door. I'd say on an average day I drive anywhere from 25 to 30 miles.

I drive about 18 miles to work each day. I take the hilly, curvy, tree-lined back roads, and it takes me about 25 minutes. I could take the interstate, fight the traffic and it would take about the same ammount of time. I enjoy the back roads..it's therapudic (sp). Sometimes I wish I hadn't sold my Vette.

to go to work it's 40 mi then home another 40 mi then to school to further my career 30 mi and another 30 to get home. it's not the driving, nor the money for gas, cuz I now drive a beater instead of my truk (which was killin my wallet) it's the lack of sleep
wake @ 5 sleep by 12 --5 days a week fri is never soon enough..
good luck with the new job-- Matt

120 miles a day, and I as opposed to most people on here, I LOVE it. It gets boring, and I gotta get up early, but having those 2 hours to myself to just sit back and listen to the radio is heaven. Those are the only hours of the day other than sleep that I have where no one is bugging me, and I'm gonna miss giving them up soon.
