I have a 02 supercrew with 5.4, not sure of gearing runs under 1500 rpm in overdrive at 55. I have had several smaller trailers in the past and the what seems to be the big influence is wind resistance. With no trailer on average around town with half highway mileage at 60 i get 14 to 15mpg. On open highways at 70 t0 75 I will get 18, at least I did when I went from Ny to Virginia, 360 miles on a 25 gallon tank.
Now towing a 16 ft enclosed aluminum sled trailer with a 5ft v-nose I get 10-11 miles to a gallon not towing in overdrive at 60 to 65 mph. The trailer loaded with a couple of ATV's weighing a bit uner 3000lbs. The trailer height is almost 10 ft tall and even though a v-nose you know you are towing if it is windy. The truck tows much easier at night because the wind seems to decrease greatly and then I can tow in overdrive at 65.
With my old trailers that were open bow that weighed up to 2000lbs I got around 14 towing in overdrive with little problems.
The only mods I got is a Gibson single cat back which seemed to help
My '02 S'crew 2wd w/5.4 & 3:55 rear gears gets 16.5 to 17 mpg agv. 50/50, city/hwy w/o trailer. I have not towed with it much nor very far. I tow it behind my motor home where it gets excellent mileage (motor home gets avg. of 8.5mpg on diesel)!
2001 F150 Super Crew Lariet with minor mods (Magnaflow SI/SO exhaust, Superchip and drop in air filter) and I have gotten as bad as 7 mpg to 9.5mpg towing a 25' center console Mako at 65 to 75 mph. The 7mph was with Gibson exhaust and before the Superchip. The tow performance on the chip was worth it in mpg and in the towing performance (rev limiter is off and winds more between shifts and does not lose power in the shifts. Usually get 14mpg overall average, but towing any weight is poor gas mileage. I do tow with the overdrive off.
