Being that I am looking for a new truck and everybody swears by the 6.0's, I went and test drove a 6.0 this weekend. This is the very first diesel I have ever driven. You guys are right, I found it very impressive, but what is with the noise? This particular truck had a noisey 6.0. I have noticed that some are louder than others. What gives here, by the way I am talking about all brand new 6.0's that I see, and hear! Some are quieter than others?

The difference between on or tow 6.0’s is negligible….diesels are louder than any other engine…all of them.
I understand that the diesels are louder. I was going to over look this, but some that I've seen are a lot noisier that others? I've been next tpo some pretty quiet ones at a light, but the one I drove this weekend was extremely loud. Then today my neighbor at the campground started his and it wasn't half as noisey as the one I drove? I couldn't ask him what year it was, but I know it was the 6.0. Are there different manufacturers for these engines, or are the owners doing things to quiet down?
It's possible your campground neighbor had an '03 that still has pilot ignition, that would make it much quieter. As far as those without PI, some may be noisier. But I doubt there's much of a variance. I think mine is noisier than one would expect, but I like it. Reminds me that's a diesel.
As an example, my FIL has the DuraMax, and it's lot quieter, too quiet for me. He drove away from my house today and I thought it was a gasser.

When I bought my truck it had the Pilot Injection (PI) enabled.. much quieter. First flash, and blam, much louder. My brother has the same truck and he has not flashed his, and his is quieter. I don't mind the noise though.. it's only at idle.. you still can't hear the diesel on the highway. Now, I've heard people complain about diesels making noise -- and I've never understood what the big deal is... these things aren't Cadilacs.. they are powerful, big, monsters designed to tow 13,000 lbs, and I dig the sound.
I personally can deal with the noise, However I don't want to wake the house and neighborhood when I'd start it up in the early am. Especially in the fall and spring when everybody has their windows open!

Another variable is that the 04 6.0's had a pretty major redesign in like 10/03 and they apparently did some things to quiet the motor down in it's current non-PI'd version. So it doesn't surprise me to hear that there are differences in the motors sound as you've got 03 and 04 both with and without PI and the 04's with the updates.
I hear you on the being friendly to your neighbors thing. I had a dmax that was very quiet and my 6.0 was also when I got it. Once it got turned off with a re-flash, I'd idle it down our quiet rural neighborhood at 5am every morning and just hope I wasn't waking anyone up.
Understand not wanting to awaken the neighbors....
then maybe that's why Mass., was it, that outlawed all loud exhaust ?
I know MANY "gassers" that are louder than my 6-oh at ALL times...
and some doofuses that pull up next to me at the light have AMPS and SPEAKERS that are louder than my truck with my windows rolled up
I like pull up enough to ensure my side exhaust is right at their window and punch it to make them roll up their window !
so I usually don't need to hear them for long... they are usually behind me
