My '99 F150 w/the 5.4 recently started a little rattle when it kicks down to pass or go up hill. I just turned 70,000 miles on it a couple weeks ago. I do have the Superchips Microtuner and also recently reprogrammed it for the 87 octane setting. When I had the 91 octane setting in it I didn't notice the noise. I changed back to the 87 to save every penny I can for an upcoming job change and move. It sounds like a rocker arm type rattle. I'm not familiar with the 5.4, but I thought I had read here that the valve train is different than say a 302 type engine.
Should I try changing the plugs? Or putting the 91 octane setting in?
Supposedly up to 100K, but I sure wouldn't wait that long. Some of the threads I've read on 5.4L plug changes make it sound like it's a real chore, but do-able.
I wouldn't call what I'm hearing "severe." It's when I step on it to pass or when it first shifts into od. Just annoying and a little worrysome. I may just switch back to 91 performance setting at the end of the week when I fill up again. I would like to tackle the plugs. Finding time to do it is the chore.
I would check the EGR ports, if they are restricted, it could cause some pinging.
I would also inspect the exhaust manifolds for broken studs. You may have a small exhaust leak, which can sound like pinging at times.
Most likely the noise is "ping" and will improve as the Adaptive Strategy routine "relearns" your driving style. This can take up to 300 miles of driving after you reset to the 87 Octane program.
However, If I were you I'd check the sparkplug torque. Some have reported a "ticking" or "pinging" or "exhaust leak" type sound, shortly before their 5.4L launched a plug. Leaving a nasty hole in it's head. (obvious bad pun here but I'll skip it)
Ok, I'll check that. I think I'll just tackle some new plugs next weekend. I did just recently have a Lightning cat back installed. It's true duals now. It was split after the cats and the noise is coming from the engine compartment as far as I can tell. It wasn't as bad yesterday, so maybe it is still in the re-learning process. Oil level is good and still have about 1,000 miles to go before an oil change. I'm using Mobil 1 5w30. Maybe a heavier weight since it is soooo hot here???
