I'm interested in getting the Diablo chip for my 2002 F-150 5.4 supercab. I read somehwere on here that you can't use 87 octane with the chips but later saw that there is a chip with 87 and 91 octane tuning options. Does anyone have performance gains for the 87 octane programming option? If I'm going to get better mileage do I really save when I'm buying more expensive gas?
An 87 octane program can be added to a DiabloSport switch chip. The performance gains? Almost none. The 87 octane program primarly adjusts the transmission parameters with a very slight power increase.
So from what I'm getting it would be a waste to use one of the tuning options for 87 octane. Another question, I read that you get more torque but I think someone also wrote that you won't necessarily be able to tow more. That doesn't seem to make sense to me. Can you better explain that? Are there any issues to look out for with 4x4s? I think I'm ready to order.
For most people, yes, it wouldn't be cost effective.
Towing capacity is determined by a number of things, horsepower and torque among those. Increasing HP and torque doesn't address the frame, suspension, tires and most importantly, brakes.
Actually if you do get either a Diablo or a Superchips Microtuner by quickening the shifts (assuming you have an automatic) you can actually quicken your truck and make it feel more powerful. They may be exaggerated, but I've heard that a chip on the 87-octane setting can shave nearly a second off a 1/4 mile time by reducing the shift lag time. I don't doubt it since my truck seems to take forever to complete a shift. It may seem off your topic but this is about the only performance gain you will see. Another thing to consider is that by firming-up the shifts, you will reduce slippage on your tranny making it last longer. In my opinion that alone can make the price well worth paying.
