I've swapped the electronics from an '85 E-150 into a '79 E-250. I have power to everything, all accessories works, but it won't start. Won't even click. On the starter relay, the two main posts are connected to the correct items (battery / starter), and the red/blue ignition wire is hooked up. What I'm wondering is... there is another connection point, which from all my searching looks like a ground connection, but it is not hooked up to anyhting. Would I be safe to hook this up to ground and try to start it again? Or have I missed something with the swap.
Yours might be different, but the wiring diagram for my 87 only shows that the starter relay is grounded thru its mounting screws. If yours is wired the same as mine when you turn the key to start you should see 12 volts on the red/light blue from the ignition switch. Only other wires are the fuse links/starter/battery cable.
I think i may have found the problem. The neutral start switch is wired differntly on the two years, so I'll replace that and see what happens. Hope it's something simple
That was it. There's a quick connect that has four wires, the neutral start switch being part of it (back up lights the other). Same quick connect for the 85 as the 79, but on the '79 the wires are rotated one space clockwise. Re spliced 'em in the right order, and she fired up.
Thanks for the info on the starter relay. The stock '79 incorporates the "I" terminal, where as the '85, like your '87, doesn't.
