The SOHC has about 50 more HP - better for towing. It also has had some issues with the cam drive. Run the VIN # and see if there are any outstanding TSB'S.
4.0 SOHC: Allot more power then 4.0, but similar torque (but still more). Fairly new motor still so parts are more expensive. Some have cam chain problems, but very few do. Very good motor over all, going into new mustang so there will be some performance parts soon.
4.0: Less power and torque then SOHC. It’s a pushrod engine, so not much of a rever (not that you’ll actually need to rev very high anyway). Good low end power, and super reliable. Also it is a time tested motor. Some have head cracking problems, but again, very few do.
I wouldn’t hesitate to own ether motors, the problems mentioned above happen very seldom, nothing to worry about.
1997 is the first year the SOHC engine was an option in the Explorer. I think both 4.0L engines were offered until '00.
TSBs are "Technical Service Bulletins" that are issued by Ford, they usually involve pointing out issues that are common to certain models, and providing information to Technicians on how to diagnose and fix those problems. I posted one of the important TSBs regarding the 4.0L SOHC timing (cam) chain/tensioner issue in this thread (#19):
The pushrod 4.0 is just barely enough for an explorer, I would go SOHC
