THanks for your help. I adjusted the steering column quite a bit. Going after the RAG JOINT- but don't know what the heck it is!! Can't e-mail 'till I post 15 posts. Yikes. That's a lot of posts. Thanks again for your help.
1) Pop the hood.
2) Stand on drivers side by the tire.
3) Look down at the end of the collum where the steering box conects to the collum.
4) You will see two shaft adapters on on the box one on the collum they go from round shaft to two flat fingers. In the middle of the four fingers you should see a rubber disk commonly know as a rag joint as you can see the textile reinforcement in the rubber.
Yes, as 44dwarf indicates, where the steering shaft joins the steering box there is what appears to be a fabric type joint so you do not have metal to metal contact. Sad explanation about location of retainer, but suspect you have found it. From engine compartment, where the steering shaft comes out of the column, there is a retainer that helps secure the shafts position in the column. Sorry, don't think this expanation is any better.
Chime in when you get an urge, you will be at the required 15 post in nothing flat.
good luck,
dave
