I have a chance to buy a 1972 F-250 crew cab xlt. It is about a 10 year old restoration on it. It is still in pretty good shape, no dents, rust, body straight. Interior is in very good shape, both seats dash, headliner perfect. i could buy it for around $3,000. Heres the rub. When they did the restore they put in a 428 engine. It has some probs. Smokes, wouldn"t restart once shut off. Lacking power. I understand this style of pickup is rather rare but is it worth buying and either putting a 390 stock back in or do a rebuild on the 428? Probably have $5,500-6,000 total into it time I got through. Still a good investment or should I save my money and steer clear? It is a 2 WD. Thanks

Well, for $3000 if you moved up to the 73-79 style you probably could buy a just as nice 2x4 with a good engine. I would do a compression test on the 428 and run the head and block numbers to make sure it is a 428. Sounds almost like a carb problem with it not restarting and lacking power.
A crew cab XLT with no rust that is straight is fairly rare in the 67-72 years, especially with a nice interior. I tried to find one ANY crew cab 67-72 before my F-100 buy, so I would say go for it as long as the engine has good compression.
