428 in 75 high boy

Any way to ID 428 other than taking apart? If not how do you ID then? Found a guy who says he has one for 100.00 bucks. Would you need to change anything to put 428 in 75 250 4x4 with automatic? I have 390 in it now. Or is it worth rebuilding a 428 to put in ? thanks cybeast

It is posible to tell by the back of the block. A standard 428 will have an A scratch cast and a cj will have a C scratch cast. But this is not a sure thing. The later 428 service blocks did not have those markings. But they had one other way to tell, they had web like ridges running vertical on the lower sides of the block. As far as fitting, you dont have anything to worry about there. It is no different than swaping 390's other than making sure you have the external flex plate. Anyway, for 100 bucks I would take it as a 390 if its not trashed. good luck!!

Do all 428 have ridges are they on both sides of block? My luck it be a more power 360. What spot on the back are scratchs. Whats on and in your 428 does it get 8 mpg?

if you take the center frost plug out it should say 428 in the hole.

You could mesure the stroke by pulling a plug and putting a piece of welding rod down the hole. The 428s were externaly balanced so it will take a flex plate with a counter weight on it.

What would be measurement on welding rod? Does a four barrel intake off 390 fit 428"s thanks

If the engine is out of the vehicle, ask to pull the oil pan. The crank should have a casting of 'IU' for the correct stroke of a 428. (it could also be a 410 if it is a 390's bore)Either way, if you find this 428 crank, you should be happy with it regardless. Also, look at the front of the block, driver side, and at the front face below the head there might be a '352' casting, or there might be a reverse '105' there. The latter is likely a 391 FT service block, which can and has been bored to 4.13" (428) size. Some of these blocks were even blank in this area, with no casting...

Engine specific (Ident) topics like this should go in the engine forum relating to that engine.

Ie: FE forum.

Post the casting numbers of the main engine parts.
meanwhile I'll ask this be moved to the FE forum

as far as "engine to truck" part as per your title..it is the same as a 360/390.

No difference.
They are all identical outside and match to transmissions the same

See you in the FE forum

FWIW lots of 69 and later blocks had the vertical ribs on the outside. Not just the 428's. By the early 70's all blocks had them. There are also some "S" sandscratch 428 blocks besides the "A and C". The crank will either be a IU or IUB. The IUA was the SCJ crank and used the cookie cutter crank sleeve with the balance weight on it. All 428 blocks were cast at DIF (dearborn) and some at CF (cleveland) foundrys. So if you find a block with a MCC (michigan casting center) logo it's not a 428 but could be a 391 block. Some of those had thicker 428 wallcores. For $100 check it out well. Even if it's not a 428 it might have some good parts.

The only sure fire way to identify an FE is to pull the head and measure the bore and stroke. Even if you pull the pan and find a 428 crank, it could still be a 410. As far as the verticle webbing on the blocks, it doesn't mean anything. I've got a 360 with those verticle webs. The mirror image 105 signifies a block with extra reinforcement in the crankshaft area and possibly better metalurgy, but that's it.

For $100, buy the engine. It's got parts you can use, swap or sell. If it's a 428, then congrats. If it's a lowly 360, then you've got a 390 block and a decent set of heads. Years ago I bought a 360/C6 combo on eBay for $30. No typo. Good trany, good heads, and a mirror image 105 block. Good luck!

The mirror "105" also represents a MCC casting (Michigan Casting Center). Actually 70's blocks may of had a slightly lower tensile strenght. I forget the exact specs but I'll look it up if interested. But with the ribs and other reinforcements it's s non issue casting wise

Man didn't realize there were that many different blocks. What years where 428 made?

I believe that they were made 66 - 70 in cars and the were still used until 74 or so in the service block form ( irrigation ). Someone please correct me if I am wrong.
