Do not use Home Depot hinges, custom build yours from cut sqaure tubing and use 3/4-1" steel rod for the pivot pins and think about using bearings so it swings easily. If you do not know how to do this, go look at dump trailers.
Remember, in a crash, you do not want the hood and fenders coming through the cab, you want them to stay on the frame and compress.
another idea for your hinges would to check with a semi parts warehouse ive heard tell of people useing these type of hinge it would definatly be heavy enough
My cousin built his own and he used school bus hinges ( he's a mech. for the school board) I don't know all the details though of exactly how he did it.
from what i understand if you have some welding and fabrication skills its not all that diffacult the first thing you need to do is remove the front clip and build a new rad mount that attaches to the frame instead of the rad support it would be a good idea to run some suport rods from the firewall to the rad mount this would give you a place to mount your wiring harness also mount voltage reg selinoid and other pieces to the fire wall . you will have to cut the rear section of the fender off and attach that to the cab weld the hood and front clip togther reinforcing where necisary also you may have to cut the very bottom of the rad suport off so it wont hit the rad when you open the hood attach hinges from frame to the rad suport and you should have it i have seen one tilt front that was home built the guy used a motor and regulator from a power window set up and that is what tilted his front end it also locked it shut deleting the need for any other type of locking device
buss hinges is an awesome idea i will look into that, the power window motor, will that handle the weight of the steel front end, or was that fiberglass??
I'm planning to use a Saab setup when I do the forward-tilt nose on my 69. This will allow the whole front end to come up, with a really tight line to the doors.
FWIW: School bus and tractor hood hinges are meant to be used on light weight fiberglass hoods and fenders and probably are not strong enough to hold a metal front end in place during a bad crash.
