I have 1980 F350 4WD, just reinstalled my rebuilt 400 with new clutch and all... first off my bushings in the equalizer aren't quite right (from a kit I bought) it seems one of them should be cupped to accept the ball on the frame... the kit came with 2 rounded outer bushings that insert into the bar... anyhow it does drag a little, but is very sound (no play)...
anyway, when pushing down on the clutch pedal my whole firewall lifts up and flexes very noticably.... it is a mechanical clutch setup and it seems the pressure on the mount (attached to the firewall) is pushing the firewall and front cab outward and upward... I thought I read somwhere through the forums that bad body mounts can cause this... mine are pretty squishy and cracking...
Any thoughts are welcome... I am trying to square away this truck after investing in the motor and drive train rebuilds and want to make it right...
My 82 F100 was like that, it was collapsed cab mounts, the entire corner of the cab would lift when you pushed in the clutch...
This is not even remotely related to the firewall flex the hyd. clutch trucks experience.
My '86 has a small crack in the firewall on the inside above the slave cylinder. I found it while trying to find a water leak. I guess I'll reinforce it one day, hopefully before it gives way.
Hey Katmandu,
What is the difference between the small kit and big kit? I got a kit from Ford a long time ago, but it was not even close to fitting my truck 85 F250HD with 460. I never returned it because one of the service techs who I knew, just gave it me. The part number I got was E3TZ 7K509 A.

I copied this from another thread.....
the small kit consist of::
template for drilling correct holes.
4 bolts and nuts.
instruction sheet.
re-inforcement bracket.
large kit consist of::
instruction sheet.
large re-inforcment bracket.
hardware kits.
Anyone have pics of the re-inforcement brackets in these kits ??
They mount on the inside of the firewall, and are quite slick. I paid $15 for the small kit, which will work most of the time, unless you really have a bad case. Someone had tried to fix mine with big flat washers, which had helped, but wasn't quite enough. The install isn't too bad, the clutch master has to be taken loose, and then the plate is attached inside with 2bolts which the template shows where to drill the holes for, and then two more are supposed to be drilled, but I didn't feel like fighting to get a drill in the area to be drilled, so I just welded the plate to the firewall in that area. It made all the difference in the world.
