would it be worth it to remove the stock muffler and cat and just run strait pipes for a while till I would get a new exhaust? Have my mig welder handy I could just cut them out and splice ina new piece in no time. Would it be way loud and would cause flutter?
are you getting a stock muffler again? it sure would be a little more noisy but you might even like it. without your cat your propably going to blacksmoke alot more but there is nothing wrong with that. i would recomend puttin some stacks on.
Cut it all out!!!!!
I cut out both cat and muffler on mine, really liked the new sound. It was rather loud though, I got a stainless steel turn down tip for it and from the cab, it is a lot quieter, but I can still hear the turbo scream. I'm guessing just blowing the exhaust at the ground helped muffle it, plus I get cool points for having a SS tip!!
It won't smoke any more with or without the cat, I don't know the purpose of it, I don't think it serves one, so it should be removed!
Yeah yank the cat and muffler. It won't smoke anymore without the cat. It will be considerably louder but both my PSDs have straight pipes, and I love the sound. On my 99 I just cut it off in front of the cat put on a 3.5 to 4 inch adapter and ran 4 inch out the side in front of the rear tire. If you run it all the way out the back it will probably be a little quieter then my setup.
What I did on mine was to peel the shell open, remove the guts and weld the shell up again. You'll need an air hammer and chisel bit to cut the baffles out unless you want to really open it up and use a torch or cutoff wheel. It added very LITTLE noise at all because the entry and exit were displaced from each other and the sound waves have to turn a corner to get out of the muffler can. It removed a lot of back pressure, I can tell by my butt-o-meter. Welding the shell back up required a lot of patience and finesse with the wirefeed because of the thin metal. Low heat and slow wire is what finally did the trick.
Thanks definetlty going to do, I will be buying a exhaust sometime but for now I think I will take the cat out and gut the muffler like it was suggested let ya all know how it went, I used to luv the old glasss packs and such so the sooound shouldnt bother me, if i screw it up just have to get a exhaust sooner than planned, just wont get a clothes washer is all!!!(she wont like that LOL LOL)
I run 3.5 straight pipe on my 86' 6.9 , sounds so good now I'm thinking of doing the same with my 96' 7.3 . I would like to know who makes a pipe to replace the converter ? I like the idea of running stacks too !
anyone ever try putting in a quick connect of sorts where the cat & muffler are supposed to go just in case the day ever comes that it's mandatory so that a quick and easy switch can be made before and after inspections?
My 86' doesn't have a turbo , but I had a White/GMC with a 430 hp. Detroit that sounded sweet ! The 7.3s I've heard with a straight pipe also have a nice sound and yes you can hear the turbo whistle .
How loud is the straight pipe? I have stock exhaust now and I am looking to make my turbo LOUD----I can hardly hear whistling like I want.....
I want a loud turbo
Straight pipe is pretty loud, but you can really hear the turbo scream. If you get an new open air intake, that will also help in making the turbo louder, the stock box tends to muffle the turbo, probably because it restricts the amount of air to the turbo. Put on an open element and she'll really breath and scream.
