Replace bed side or entire bed?

I have a97 Extended cab that has a totally crumpled driver's bed side. I'd like to find a matching white side, cut the spot welds, and install it myself. Many have told me not to bother, just go find an entire bed. The rest of my bed is perfect and has great spray in liner, so I hate to junk it, plus I really cannot afford the $700.00 or so that another white bed is going to run.
Can I replace the skin? (I'm pretty competent at stuff like this, have plasma and MIG, plus lots of tools and equipment).
Totally unrelated question: What's a COP when speaking of replacing spark plugs on the 4.6? (Sorry, but I was just getting carburetors down pat).
