Power Steering Nightmare

Hello Everyone,

I just installed a new power steering pump off my 300. Brand Spanking new lines, and pump from Napa, pretty nice actually. However, it seems like it has mood swings. Some times I have to mildly fight it, Some times I don't have to fight it at all, while other times its an insane battle to get it turned. The pump had a little sticker saying the pump is known to make noise for at least 500 miles (supposed break in period), which it does (it only has 23 miles on it), but still, has anyone else had this expierience?

Thanx,

James Russell

You could try jacking it up and turning it back & forth to try & bleed it. Sounds like it's still got air in it ,or is getting air in it from somewhere.

After it has been bled out a PS pump should not make noise. New car PS pumps don't make noise for the first 500 miles. It should only take a few minutes to bleed the air out of the system by turning the wheels back and forth. Prime the pump by turning it by hand after it is first filled.

Always use a filter when making any replacements on a PS system. Use the filter below in the return line from the PS unit to the pump.

Wix transmission/PS filter #58964
200 psi working, pressure relieved, magnetic
change yearly or 12000 miles
Ford equivalent filter kit #XC3Z-7B155-AA
filter alone #XC3P-7B155-BA
