Steering column rebuild ?

Where can I find an exploded view of all the parts of my
steering column? I recently received an old one from the salvage yard and would like to rebuild it.

You can find assy drawings in the Ford OEM service manuals on CD-ROM available at the online store.

Thanks, I ordered the cd for 1973, I hope it has what I need. I'll get plenty of use out of it even if it doesn't.

Thanks for supporting this site also!

Paper manuals are great but the CD manuals have other redeeming factors. You don't get black greasy finger prints on them. You can print out a few pages that cover the repair you are doing then toss them in the trash (oops -recycle box) when finished. The OEM CD's have a whole bunch of info that the paper manuals don't have. You will like them.

Question Steering column rebuild ?

Any advice on rebuilding a steering column? I had the gear box and lots of front end work done last fall, but have been unsuccessful in finding a source for the bearings and exploded views of a steering colunm. Bad body mounts tore up the inards, so while it steers, it's stiff and doesn't return smoothly. The upper bearing in the shift collar is fine, but the lower is, I'm sure, ground down to little if anything. I'm considering finding a column at a salvage yard, rebuilding it, and doing a swap, as the neutral safety switch accuator broke several years ago. Thanks.

Matt

I trust this is what you are looking for?

Just food for thought: The Original Ford shop manual is a mechanics best friend and worth it's weight in Gold.
These original shop manuals are available on CDRom at our online store www.motorhaven.com

You get so much value for your money and always have a reference.

What do the two driver facing bolts on the upper flange do? I'm having trouble getting the upper and lower flanges depressed while simulateously pulling on the main shaft to apply the upper snap ring.

I have these to bolts installed and don't think that they're impacting this. See my other post -- I really need help, I can't put my steering wheel back on.

Thanks.
Mike

Those are 2 T type bolts that hook the upper section to the shift section. Put the nuts on , and if you notice the holes they go into are elongated, so kind of pull them together to open them, and when you release them they should go back under the shoulder that holds them on. It's really alot simpler to do than it is to describe. Stanley

I had to rebuild the steering column in my 73 F100 and I found a great source on the web for drawings and parts. These guys are also very helpful on the phone. They deal mainly in Bronco parts but most of the steering column internals are interchangeable with the F-series parts.
