Angry 75 F250: Engine Cranks But Won't Start...

Hi...I fount this site by searching the web about my problem....

I just replaced the fuel pump yesterday, There is gas in the tanks, new battery & cabels, new spark plugs, wires, cap & rotor. Fuel filters are 6 months old. It has always had a hard time starting even after replacing everything but the fuel pump. So, when it pulled this stunt I automatically figured fuel pump, but when I pulled it out it looked brand new!!!! I changed it anyway, but doubted that would fix it, and I was right. Any other suggestions? I have good spark, but it doesn't seem to be getting gas to the carb. HELP!!!!!!

Go get a can of starter fluid. If it will hit on that, then you do have a fuel problem. Then start at the carb and work back to the tank. If it will not hit on the starter fluid then you have a ignition problem. You say you have good spark, but how strong is it? Can you hold a plug a 1/4 inch off ground and throw a nice blue spark. I have seen times when you would be a spark, but it was not strong enough to fire under compression. It that is the case check the coil and the dizzy.

Look for a pinched fuel line or you might have dirt and or rust in the tank so even though you replaced the filter it might be clogged again. You can buy the cheap clear plastic filters and see if it is getting clogged if so gotta drop the tank and clean her out.

Check your timing. When I first bought my truck, the timing was so off, it wouldn't start up.

Check for gas getting to the carb by looking down the throat and moving the throttle. If gas squirts into the carb then you got fuel. Pull a plug wire and check for spark. If no spark, it might be the ignition amplifier if you have duraspark. If no duraspark then check the points and condensor.

Hook a vaccuum gauge to the suction side of the pump and see if it is drawing. I have run from a jerry can to rule out the lines and tank further back. The spark needs to be checked with a spark tester, since we all have different opionions of what "good spark" is. KD makes a nice one. Hope this helps.

Dry rotted rubber fuel line between the tank and frame? This would cause it to suck air.

Found the problem.... The Fuel Tank Selector Valve. I started by checking hoses, suction, filters, carb. everything checked out. When I got underneath to look at the lines coming off the tanks, I noticed the valve was so rusted, that chunks of it were falling off. Then I remembered that the truck dies everytime I switch tanks, and won't start for 5 -10 min. afterwards. I took a chance, changed it out, and it started up better than before. Thanks guys!!!

Engine needs : Fuel...Spark ....Air...all to be delivered to each cylinder at a specified time.

Which ones don't you have ?

It wasn't getting fuel, even though it had PLENTY of gas in both tanks. The tank selector was bad. I replaced it, and it starts faster, and doesn't stall anymore when I switch tanks.

Thanks!

I having trouble starting my 75 F350 after running out of gas. I put in 10 gallons but no luck. Changed the coil pulled every spark plug and cleaned new wires. I can see gas in gas filter cranks but won't start. I shot it with starter fluid and no luck.

Does it chug or sputter at all? If you for sure have spark (which you didnt specify if you checked if you did) and for sure getting fuel (fuel in filter doesnt mean its making it all the way through the carb) I would check the timing. You said you tried starter fluid but didn't describe what happened. More details help us help you.

edit: also, since you ran your tank completely empty, that puts you at a higher risk of having sucked some debris into your fuel filter or lines (or possibly past the filter into the carb).

Is the gas moving inside the filter? You might just have air in the lines, and if it's a rear tank, then the fuel has quite a ways to travel before it provides pressure at your carburetor.

And it would've been OK if you'd started a new thread...

Although these old threads are cool, because I always like to click on the profile of screen names which I don't recognize, and see when they last logged in or posted to the site...

Hey Jersey. So no clicking at all? Or you get a click, but the starter does not turn the engine over?
