Question Trailer Brakes

I have a 2002 F250 with the 7.3 L. Deisel. It has an electric brake controller for the brakes. When I hook it up to my trailer and step on the brake the motor dies. Has any one else had this problem? I don;t know if the problem is in the truck, controller or the trailer. Any help will be appretiated.
Thanks,
Buddymx

Well lets see if we can trouble shoot this thing. We need some more info. What kind of controller is it? Is it plugged into the trucks harness or is it wired up by itself? Are we talking RV trailer or utility/cargo?

It is a Draw tite 5100, hooked up to the factory harness. The trailer is a 24' Haulmark race trailer.

i looked at the wireing schematic and both an "ignition" signal and a "trailer electronic brake control feed" signal pass through a common relay the "trailer tow backup lamp relay" it is in the small relay box right next to the main under hood fuse box, i think it is the front relay(not positive) it could just be the relay but my guess would be that something is wrong with the controller. hopefully it is one of thoes two.

I would check the relay as stated by wlihntr, if its pluged into the factory harness the relay would replace the required 20 amp circuit breaker. Just to see I would try to manual engage the controller.
