Oil Pump

I am thinking about replacing my oil pump and rod bearings while the engine is out, both look good. I was thinking about a Melling High Volume pump and clevite bearings. Any Thoughts?????

Stay with the standard pump, a HV will put more load on the distributor gear causing it to wear faster. If you have 40 psi at 2000rpm I wouldnt worry about it. If you have low pressure, Its probably the cam bearings going.

New oil pumps are like new water pumps. They're cheap insurance.

Ditto staying with a standard pump.

If you've got the engine torn down that far, why not go ahead and freshen it up all the way. Crank, rod, and cam bearings are cheap and easy to get to if you've already got the engine out. Mic the cylinder bores, but don't mess with them unless you are at least .010 out or have a busted ring.

You're right bearings are cheap. Std. pump is cheaper than the HV to.

Ok, now you guys are starting to scare me.. what OTHER issue is there with the HV pump? I've always done HV every chance I get to change, and I've just done the same here with my 460 (going into my 55 F100).

I know about the pickup scavenging issue at sustained high rpms. But I don't plan to do that.

There are many opinions on this subject. I don't think any are wrong. Standard pumps have a big following. They do the job they are made to do and cause very few problems.

HV pumps are also fine. I like to use a larger pan with them. The only problem I have seen is sheared dist gears but that is an easy fix.

In my current build I'll be using a standard HP pump. This is the the recommendation of a guy who has been building these motors almost longer than I have been alive and I'm building a stroker. I wanted something 40+ psi at idle warm. IMO it is most important to have good pressure when there is a load on the engine regardless of rpm.

Most of the engines I build are for racing with a large capacity pan, billet pump drive.I wasn't sure about the stock pan in the trucks because of the odd shape of it. After the replys I am sure a standard pump will work fine in most truck applications.
