as anyone who noticed my other posts knows my 4wd isnt working. i just replaced a hub and now...no 4wd. so today i pulled the bub back off and put a new rubber o ring on it, since i figured it must not be getting the seal it needed to lock the hubs. well it still doesnt work. and here is what is going on and some things i noticed. 1. when i put it in 4wd i get a click click sound for about 2 seconds fromt he same wheel i just put the new hub in, but it doesnt lock. 2. when in 4wd and in park the front driveshaft will not turn by hand (as to be expected) BUT BOTH front driveshafts WILL turn by hand. is THIS to be expected?? i figured they wouldnt turn since they should be linked to the driveshaft during 4wd operation. any ideas, ANY???
You can't assume it's always a hub or a wheel end problem. You have to look at other things, too. I referenced this TSB before, it has a comprehensive diagnostic procedure for the PVH system:
Here is the Ford Factory Manual "Wheel End Vacuum Seal Test" that is refeenced in the TSB:
NOTE: Whenever the front wheel hub, axle shaft or the hub lock is removed and installed, the front wheel-end assemblies must be leak-checked to ensure that the sealing surfaces are intact. Failure to do so can cause the loss of four wheel drive operation and contamination of the vacuum system.
1. Disconnect the wheel-end vacuum hose.
2. Connect your hand vacuum pump to the PVH vacuum hose.
3. Apply 15 in-Hg of vacuum to the wheel-end assembly and observe the reading for thirty (30) seconds.
4. The wheel-end assembly must not leak more than 0.50 in-Hg in thirty (30) seconds.
thank you, i was lookin for that info. another note. i had my GF back up the truck in 4wd and the front driveshaft and axles turned. so i guess it is locking into 4wd but the hubs arent. if you have a leak on 1 side will that prevent the other from locking as well?
I think one side can engage while the other side does not. I've even heard of a case where the vacuum hose came off one the hublocks and the driver lost only that side of the FWD engagement. The Ford Manual says to check both wheel ends for leaks, which is consistent with that kind of thinking...
there is a little solenoid that puts vaccume to your hubs and there is computer called a gem module this computer is what tells the solonid to put pressure so your computer could have gone bad or maybe your solonid whet bad. On my truck i had to replce my gem module and it fixed the problem.
