okay heres my problem. i've been running C6/351w combo in 89 ford 1/2 ton that sees frequent drag strip duty. last season the bell housing on the C6 split so i am going to have to replace it. should i replace it with a built C4 or go back to the C6. I heard that it takes significantly more power to turn a C6 than it does to drive a C4, but is this savings worth the loss in stength.
I now there are some pretty wild mustangs out there running C4's and i am wondering if they are standing up alright or if they are frequently destroyed. thanks.
if you were to chek you would find that before they came up with the "trick" transmissions they presently have for the drag strip there were quite a few people driving bowties and MOPARS that had adapted C6 for its strength. i would be curious how the housing broke. the C6 like the GM turbo 400 is a heavy trans but will take a tremendous amounr of abuse. the C4 even tricked out can only withstand so much torque. there is only so much room for strengthening. I am not trying to insult your understanding but i have had some peoplr assume they had a C6 because they knew it was not a C4 but turned out to be FMX. a lot of the 351w had the FMX
don't worry about insulting me, but this is definitly a C6. i am familiar with both the C6 and the FMX. This paticular 351w is origianlly out of a 73 mercury which had the FMX. when i rebuilt it and put it into this truck, which originally had an AOD, i swapped in the C6. The housing cracked immediatly after putting traction bars on so i am assuming it was just from the torque. i have heard of people also installing different internals in a C6 to make them more efficient. do you know anything about this.
In an '89, it would be a C6 unless someone swapped in an FMX. The C6 has the one-piece housing, the FMX has a seperate bellhousing. I agree the C6 is a better choice than the C4 for a hard use/high torque application. The C6 and TH400 are about the strongest pickup truck auto transmissions ever made.
I disagree Technonut. http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerc...27&prmenbr=361 Just add the bell housing of whatever motor you want to put it behind and you're all set. The company that makes it sells a bell housing made of a high strength aluminum alloy with bolt patterns for the 5.0/5.8, the 4.6, the 5.4, the V10, and the 390 and 428 FE.
