hi all. my borther has a 97 F-150 with the 4.6 and it sputters upon high acceleration. he thought it was maybe the fuel filter so he put a new one on and it didnt help. he thinks that its firing, but it just isnt getting the fuel that it needs. could it be that he needs new fuel injectors? if so, what do you have to do to change them?
Thanks
EDIT--it will not do in with it in N but about 70-80 mph in 2nd gear (auto) will produce it what i am trying to describe
How many miles on the clock? Has he done all the routine PM. Are the plugs, wires, pcv etc.all up to date? Any CEL's? If so I'd run some FI cleaner (Techron) through there a couple of times before even considering replacing all the injectors.
well there are almost 190,000 mi. on it. he does all the routine maintence himself, but isnt the original owner. my other bro changed the plugs and wires when he had the truck. and i dont know about the pcv. what do you mean be CEL's? he has tried some FI cleaner (i dont know what brand) but i guess it didnt seem to help. also.......the check engine light didnt come on or anything.
Yes, absolutely, check the fuel pressure. 190K miles may have beat up the fuel pump. CEL = check engine light. There may be some DTCs (diagnostic trouble codes) that didn't result in a CEL See if you can get the codes read and post them here. I'm sure someone will be able to help.
well today he cleaned the MAF and on the way home tonight the "CEL" came on. also nobody in our town here in central NE wont read the codes or check fuel pressure without takin it to the shop. also it has a Generation 2 Airaid intake and a Poweraid throttle body spacer. as well as a Jet Chip.
also, what the best code reader to buy and where from?
I bought mine at AutoZone. I can't remember the name right off, but it is orange. It just reads and will reset codes. It's around 140 bucks. They also have a better one that will read a lot of engine sensors such as temp and such. It's about $299.
ok thanks....we'll keep that in mind. well we've given up and its going into the local shop sometime at the beginning of this week so we'll see what caused it. it was not doin its thing quite as bad after we cleaned the MAF. so thanks for all the info guys.
